Easing Vocal Stress:  Alexander Technique for Speakers

Feel vocal strain when speaking or storytelling?  So did F.M. Alexander, the originator of the Alexander Technique.  He discovered how to ease vocal stress, and perform with greater flexibility and endurance.  This workshop offers an introduction to Alexander’s discovery, especially as it applies to use of the voice in performance.  It is useful for public speakers and singers.

Crafting Stories From Nursery Rhymes

Judith will share the techniques she uses in creating stories using traditional Mother Goose stories and songs.  Participants will learn to craft their own stories, using short poems, songs, or nursery rhymes.

This workshop or residency can be adapted to any age or length of time.  It could be an hour presentation, a three hour workshop, or a week-long residency, culminating in the participants performing their creations for an audience.

Creating a Circle Time

This workshop is especially for educators of preschool and kindergarten age children.  Participants will join in several different “circles” on different seasons and topics, and then be asked to create a circle time of their own, using materials provided by Judith, or from their own school libraries.   If time permits, the participants may share their creations with the other participants.  A hand-out will be given that provides several circles, and a bibliography of additional resources for creating them.  For additional information on Circle Time, click here.  (link to Circle Time page on this web site)

This workshop could be a presentation of one hour, or a workshop of up to three hours.

Storytelling for Young Children

Drawing on her experience as a Waldorf kindergarten teacher, Judith shares the philosophy and techniques of telling fairy tales and nature stories to preschool age children.  This workshop is designed for anyone who teaches preschool age children.  It can be from one to two hours in length.

Making and Using Table Puppets for Storytelling

Table puppets are simple hand made dolls that can be moved about on a tabletop draped with cloth, and using bits of wood and stone to suggest the scene of a story.  Judith will demonstrate the use of table puppets in a story, then participants will construct a puppet of their choosing.

This workshop can be a one hour presentation only, or a three hour workshop in which the participants will construct their own puppet.  This workshop would make a good companion to “Storytelling for Young Children,” having one workshop in the morning, and the other in the afternoon.

Warming up the Voice and Body

Judith draws from her experience as a yoga instructor to teach a twenty minute warm-up routine that is useful before performing.  The routine is also a good thing to do every morning and evening, as it energizes, refreshes, and de-stresses the body and mind.

This workshop takes one hour, and requires that participants are dressed in clothing that is easy to move in.

Creative Drama

Judith has had extensive experience leading groups of children and adults in creative drama.  The group first listens to a story, then working together divides the story into scenes and analyzes the action of the story, who the characters are, and where and when it takes place.  Then using simple props and costume pieces, the group acts out the story.  Usually we act the story several times, giving different participants the opportunity to play different roles.

This workshop is good for children of any age, and can be a one hour playing of a short story (recommended for young children) up to a week-long residency for older children, perhaps culminating in a performance of the story.  This workshop or residency is quite flexible, and can be adapted to whatever time frame or situation that is presented.

Residencies

Judith is available for any length residency, and is listed on the Missouri Arts Council School Touring Roster, so funding is available for her work.
